Top 5 Best Crime Dramas on Netflix

Updated: Apr 26, 2019

For me, my most favourite crime drama would have to be Happy Valley. I was absolutely ecstatic when I found out that it was returning for a third series; so my first of my five top crime dramas on Netflix would have to be Happy Valley.

1. Happy Valley

Happy Valley is a British Crime Drama, filmed and set in the Calder Valley, West Yorkshire. In May 2015, Happy Valley won the BAFTA Award for Best Drama Series. The series stars Sarah Lancashire, as a police officer, who becomes obsessed with stalking Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), who raped her daughter, conceived her grandchild, and caused her to commit suicide.

2. Broadchurch

An absolutely incredible crime drama, a must watch, in my opinion. When a young boy is found dead below the cliffs a detective (who appears to be very troubled) played by David Tennant, arrives to lead the case. It stars Olivia Colman, who, rightly so, has amassed a plethora of awards for her outstanding acting ability. You need to watch! All 3 seasons are on Netflix, so you can binge watch to your hearts content.

3. Bodyguard

Richard Madden and Keely Hawes star in this incredible crime drama, where Madden plays the bodyguard to the Home Secretary. Directed by Jed Mercurio, who I am sure you will have read me raving about his other work in previous blog posts, it was first broadcast on BBC, where it amassed a huge finale audience of 17 million viewers. It became the most watched crime drama since records began in 2002. If that doesn't convince you enough to watch it, I'm not sure what will.

4. Luther

Idris Elba (who plays John Luther) has received critical acclaim for his role as John Luther and has been awarded a Critics' Choice Television Award, Golden Globe Award, NAACP Image Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance. Elba manages to track down the most violent of criminal masterminds and always miraculously manages to save the victim just in the nick of time. Luther has run for six seasons, which I strongly recommend you watch on Netflix!!

5. Making a Murderer

The show follows the case of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, who were arrested for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Both series' focus on whether Avery is an innocent man or not, and the show gained a huge response from the audience. The first series focuses more on the whodunnit, the second series explores how such a crime was pinned on what could be an innocent man, who is currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
